The Question Makeover

15–20 minutesCommunicationSkill practicePairsIn personVirtualHybrid

What is this activity?

Transform routine questions into more natural, human conversations.

Preparation

Ask participants to bring three questions they regularly ask in their work. Arrange pairs.

How to run it

  1. 1Write down at least three questions you commonly ask.
  2. 2Practise asking them aloud with a partner.
  3. 3Discuss how the other person might feel when hearing each question.
  4. 4Rewrite the questions using warmer, clearer, more conversational language.
  5. 5Practise again, experimenting with tone and timing.

Example in Action

You're teaching people how to ask better questions. Ask participants to write down three questions they regularly ask colleagues or customers. For example, “What do you want?” could become “What would a great outcome look like for you?” Participants practise the original and revised questions with a partner, then discuss how the different wording changes the conversation.

Make it your own
