Activity 21
The Case Study Challenge
What is this activity?
Investigate a realistic case, diagnose the problem and defend a recommended response.
Preparation
Prepare a one- or two-page case with background, evidence, stakeholder perspectives and an unresolved problem. Provide a recommendation template.
How to run it
- 1Give groups time to read the case and identify the central problem.
- 2Separate known facts from assumptions or missing information.
- 3Discuss underlying causes and possible responses.
- 4Agree on one recommended course of action with supporting evidence.
- 5Present recommendations and challenge them with questions.
Example in Action
You're teaching people how to solve problems or make better decisions. Give groups a case study about a fictional company experiencing high employee turnover. Provide information such as employee survey results, exit interview comments and performance data. Ask participants to identify the underlying problem, separate facts from assumptions and recommend one course of action supported by evidence.
Distinction: This method emphasises evidence and diagnosis; the earlier Scenario Challenge emphasises choosing priorities.
Make it your own
