What is this activity?
Build plain-language explanation skills through a guessing game.
Preparation
Prepare complex concepts or ask participants to select their own.
How to run it
- 1Describe a concept without using its formal name or jargon.
- 2Others guess what it is.
- 3Invite alternative descriptions.
- 4Reveal the concept and discuss which wording was clearest.
Example in Action
Give participants a familiar but potentially complicated concept, such as inflation, cloud computing or compound interest. They must describe it without using the actual term. For example, someone might explain inflation as “when the same £10 buys you fewer things than it did last year.” Others guess the concept and discuss which explanations were easiest to understand.
Make it your own
Adapt the topic, scenario or materials to suit your audience.
